LEBANON, Tenn. — The Martin Methodist Softball team suffered a pair of Mid-South Conference losses Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-3 and 8-0, at Cumberland (Tenn.).
The opening contest was a tight one, with Martin Methodist striking for the opening run of the ballgame in the top of the first. Cumberland added a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, and tacked on two more in the third to push its lead to 4-1.
The sixth saw the RedHawks plate a pair to make the contest a one-run ballgame, but the visitors left a runner stranded and were retired in order in the seventh for the defeat.
The nightcap saw Cumberland take control early with three runs in the second and three more in the third. The home team ended the contest in the sixth inning with two runs to push the final score to 8-0.
Shelby Clifton had a hit in each of the two contests to pace the RedHawks at the plate.
Sophomore right-hander Kamryn Murdock suffered the loss in the circle in the opener, while Savannah Sands received the defeat in the finale.
Despite the losses, the RedHawks (9-21, 7-19 MSC) still hold a lopsided 38-16 record in the all-time series versus their longtime rivals.
The two squads are tentatively set to tangle once more next Tuesday, April 27, in Lebanon, Tenn.
