RedHawks Defeat No. 17 Reinhardt

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. — The Martin Methodist Baseball team struck for five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back in a 10-7 victory versus No. 17 Reinhardt (Ga.) Wednesday afternoon at Bobby Walker Field.

In a return matchup between the two ballclubs, the RedHawks (10-20) outslugged the Eagles (28-14) on an unseasonably cool late-April afternoon at East Campus.

The visitors broke for three runs in the top of the first, but Martin Methodist wasted little time in delivering a counter shot, plating five runs — three of which came on the lone hit of the inning — a moon shot from left fielder Hayden Wright.

Wright was one of two RedHawks with multiple hits on the day, as second baseman Derrick Junker also collected a pair of singles in the contest.

The visitors crept closer with a run in the top of the second, but Martin Methodist never relinquished the lead, plating two runs in the bottom of the third. The RedHawks added insurance in the late stages of the game, with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Lance Pope also delivered a home run for the RedHawks, accounting for both of the runs in the eighth on a two-run shot to deep left field.

After a shaky start, Austin Griffith settled down and tossed five full innings to collect the win on the mound. Griffith surrendered six hits and four runs, but only one of the runs was earned.

Brock Young pitched three near-perfect innings of work in relief of Griffith, and center fielder-turned-pitcher JD White recorded the final three outs of the ballgame.

The RedHawks return to action on Friday, April 23, when they host rival Freed-Haldeman (Tenn.). The squad will host a rescheduled doubleheader versus the Lions (20-20) beginning at 3 p.m.

Martin Methodist will celebrate Senior Day in between ballgames of Friday's doubleheader.
