Box Score 2 PULASKI, Tenn. – Martin Methodist softball split their first day of the conference series with second-ranked Lindsey Wilson College, handing the Blue Raiders their first loss of the season.
The RedHawks collected just one hit in the game, but capitalized on three walks and a hit-by-pitch in the fourth inning to plate the lone run of the game, which led to the 1-0 win.
The story of the game, however, came with the MMC defense, which shut down every Lindsey Wilson attempt to score. Kamryn Murdock (SO) spun the shutout in the circle, allowing nine hits, striking out four, and stranding all 11 of LWC's runners. Murdock allowed only two free bases, and went the distance for the win. The RedHawks played errorless defense and turned two double plays in the victory.
MMC matched Lindsey Wilson's offense in the second game, both turning out seven hits in the extra inning affair. Hannah Hayes (JR/HAZEL GREEN, Ala.) led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing at the dish, and Savannah Sands (SO/Lincoln, Ala.) threw all eight innings with just three earned runs.
After four scoreless innings, the Blue Raiders struck first with a run in the top of the 5th, immediately answered by the RedHawks. In the bottom half of the inning, Haley Kyle (SR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Hayes used back-to-back singles to put two on for Chaney Dutton (FR/Hartselle, Ala.) who drove in Kyle on a base hit through the left side. Samantha King (SR/Chapel Hill, Tenn.) then plated Hayes with an RBI single to give MMC the 2-1 lead.
LWC knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the 6th. It appeared that the RedHawks took advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh to take a second victory, but on a questionable called-strike passed ball, Hayes was called out in a bang-bang play at the plate. The Blue Raiders would go on to score three in the extra frame for a 5-2 win.
The RedHawks are back in action on Saturday, April 3rd at noon to wrap up the series with Lindsey Wilson.
