HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of Tennessee Southern Track and Field teams competed in the SSAC Championships over the weekend. The event was hosted by William Carey University. In the programs second year, they won three SSAC individual championships and Bruno Villazon took home the SSAC Outstanding Athlete for the event.
The men's squad bested their eight place finish this year with a six place score and were less than 10 points out of a top four finish.
Villazon finished second in the 1500 m, and he won both the 5000 m and the 3000 m steeplechase. He led all the individual athletes with 28 total points scored.
Jacob Sanchez took first in the Javelin throw.
Frankline Kipruto took second in the 10000 m and in the 800 m. He also won the 1500 m.
Lee Steakley took a podium third place finish in the shotput and finished sixth in the discus. Steakley earned all-conference honors in the shotput.
Matthew Andrea finished fourth in the 1500 m. Cody Hill placed eighth in the 5000 m. Silas Hatton took seventh in the long jump, and Amon Rotich claimed seventh in the steeplechase.
The women's team tied a program best finishing eighth.
Claire Deaton took fourth in the 10000 m and in the 5000 m.
Amelia Worsley finished eighth in the 10000 m.
Miriam Schulz finished seventh in the 3000 m steeplechase.
Head Coach Justin Watson was pleased with each squad's showing this weekend, "It was a fantastic meet—three individual conference champions in four different events, and four all conference honorees. We also had three 4^th place finishes, narrowly missing the podium. Our total points scored in the meet were far better for both the men and the women. It was a cool way to bring our season to an end. We will rest up briefly and be ready for cross in a few short weeks!"
