ATHENS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern women's golf team successfully defended home turf this week, capturing the team title at the Firehawk Fall Invitational at Canebrake Golf Club.
The Firehawks posted a three-round total of 918 (301-306-311) to edge Freed-Hardeman by two strokes and secure their first team championship of the 2026-27 season. UT Southern held the tournament lead from the opening round through the final hole, fending off a late challenge from the Lions to claim the title on its home course.
The championship effort was fueled by a balanced lineup that featured three Firehawks finishing among the top six individually and four placing inside the top 14.
Maryssa Phillips led the way for UT Southern with a tie for second place. Phillips carded rounds of 76, 72, and 76 to finish at 224 (+8), matching Freed-Hardeman's Zoe Phillips for runner-up honors and finishing eight shots behind medalist Peyton Mraz.
Harper Quick added another strong performance, tying for fourth with a 225 (+9). Quick posted rounds of 75, 74, and 76 to record her second top-five finish of the young season.
Elsa Myhrinder continued her impressive fall campaign with a sixth-place finish. The sophomore turned in rounds of 75, 76, and 75 to finish at 226 (+10), giving UT Southern three golfers inside the tournament's top six.
Savannah Sandlin contributed a 14th-place finish with a score of 243, while Araya Hughes rounded out the scoring lineup in 15th place at 258.
UT Southern's depth ultimately proved to be the difference. The Firehawks placed four golfers inside the top 15 and finished ahead of Freed-Hardeman, Bethel (Tenn.), Faulkner, and Toccoa Falls to claim the championship trophy.
