WEST POINT, Miss. – The UT Southern men's and women's golf teams wrapped up regular-season play this week at the BMCU Invite, hosted at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi. Both Firehawk squads turned in competitive showings against strong conference and regional fields as they now turn their attention toward the postseason.
On the men's side, UT Southern finished seventh in the team standings with a three-round score of 942 (+78), posting rounds of 315, 301, and 326. The Firehawks made a strong move in the second round, improving by 14 strokes from the opening day before settling into seventh place in the final standings.
Luke Mattox led the way for UT Southern, tying for ninth overall with a three-round total of 227 (+11). Mattox opened with a 74, followed with a 78 in the second round, and closed with a 75 to earn the Firehawks' top individual finish.
Tyler Wilson turned in another solid tournament, tying for 25th with a 234 (+18). Wilson carded rounds of 81, 75, and 78 over the three rounds.
Ethan Lunsford finished tied for 50th at 241 (+25), shooting 82, 73, and 86. Jack Brockie tied for 52nd with a 242 (+26) after rounds of 83, 80, and 79, while Nathan Calahan tied for 70th at 250 (+34) with rounds of 82, 79, and 89.
On the women's side, UT Southern placed seventh overall with a team total of 999 (+135), recording rounds of 322, 344, and 333. The Firehawks sat seventh after the opening round, slipped during round two, and then bounced back with an 11-shot improvement in the final round to remain seventh in the final standings.
Iona Pollitt paced the Firehawks with a runner-up finish, carding a three-round score of 226 (+10). Pollitt opened with a 76, followed with a 79, and closed in impressive fashion with a 71 to finish just two shots out of medalist honors.
Maryssa Phillips also posted a strong finish for UT Southern, tying for 13th with a 240 (+24). Phillips turned in rounds of 75, 81, and 84.
Harper Quick placed 30th overall with a score of 249 (+33), carding rounds of 77, 90, and 82. Savannah Sandlin finished 50th with a 284 (+68) after rounds of 94, 94, and 96. Tatyana Greene did not record a tournament score.
UT Southern now turns its focus to the SSAC Championships at RTJ Cambrian Ridge. The men will compete April 13-15, while the women are set to tee off April 20-22.
