BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The 2021 MSC Women's Tennis Tournament got underway on Thursday with the Opening Round at Centre Court, and the RedHawks earned a 5-0 win to advance.
The ninth-seeded RedHawks (3-10) opened up the tournament with a 5-0 victory over the No. 8-seeded Bears (4-9). After a forfeit at No. 3 doubles, Martin Methodist clinched the doubles point with a victory at No. 1 doubles. The RedHawks' Emely Castro (SO/London, England) and Leovanna Viamonte (FR/Weston, Fla.) defeated Pikeville's Luisa Diaz and Gabriela Guacanes 6-3.
Following a forfeit at No. 6 singles, MMC went up 3-0 in the match when Margaret Lucas (SO/Decatur, Alabama) defeated Camila Agudelo 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Viamonte increased the RedHawks lead to 4-0 with a 6-3 6-0 victory over Riley Mullins at No.4 singles. Martin Methodist clinched the match when Shayla Youngblood picked up a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles over Erica Metzger.
Martin Methodist will face top-seeded University of the Cumberlands at 10 a.m. CT at Centre Court.
