Firehawks Defeat Shawnee State in MSC Opening Round

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The 2022 Mid-South Conference Men's Tennis Tournament began Thursday with opening round matches at the Warren Country Tennis and Sports Facility.

Thomas More (Ky.), Georgetown (Ky.) and Tennessee Southern all picked up victories to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. Thomas More will take on top-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 9:30 a.m. CT, Georgetown (Ky.) will face No. 2 seed Cumberlands (Ky.) at 3:30 p.m. CT and Tennessee Southern takes on No. 3 seed Cumberland (Tenn.) at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Thomas More vs. Bethel

Eighth-seeded Thomas More (10-10) defeated Bethel (6-13) 4-0.  Anderson McDowell and Nehmia Molla defeated Bethel's Juan David Hernandez and Joao Andre 6-1 in No. 2 doubles. Thomas More won the doubles point when Juan Pablo Villagrana Francisco and Payson Scott defeated Marcos Neves and Jeffery Lee 6-4.

The Wildcats got wins from Scott at No. 6 singles, McDowell at No. 1 singles and clinched the match with a victory from Molla at No. 5 singles.

Georgetown vs. Freed-Hardeman

No. 7 seed Georgetown (10-13) defeated No. 10 seed Freed-Hardeman (3-11) 4-0. Logan Smallwood and Matthew Thomas defeated Freed-Hardeman's Brayden Martin and Clay Durham 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. Georgetown won the doubles point with a victory from Zach White and Tsugunosuke Hirose winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

The Tigers got wins from Stephen Taylor at No. 6 singles, Parker Clarke at No. 3 singles and clinched the match with a victory from Smallwood at No. 4 singles.

Tennessee Southern vs. Shawnee State

No. 6 seed Tennessee Southern (19-7) defeated 11th-seeded Shawnee State (3-18) 4-0. Rage Matcuk and Felipe Dias won No. 3 doubles for Tennessee Southern 6-0. The Firehawks clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory from Nic Rosa and Guilherme Cupertino at No. 2 doubles.

Tennessee Southern got wins from Cupertino at No. 5 singles, Asahi Tetsuya at No. 3 singles and clinched the match with a victory from Rosa at No. 6 singles.
